Streptococcus Pyogenes

Bleh. Those two words are no fun. They are especially no fun for a toddler. Let's start this little story from the beginning.

It's Friday, September 14th and I notice that Nate has a low grade fever and has developed a runny nose. A couple of days later, he is still running the low grade fever, now has a stuffy nose, and Grace has contracted this as well because now her temperature is in the low grade fever zone as well. Now it's Monday, September 17th. Grace technically has a temperature, so I can't take her to school. I call the pediatrician's office and speak to the nurse. I tell her the kids don't really have any symptoms except runny noses and stuffiness and low grade fever, but she tells me to come in, so I do. Meanwhile, Nate developed this little rash on his chin. I think this is due to the excessive drooling thanks to the stuffy nose. I write that off and figure when his nose clears up, so will the rash.

So the Doctor comes in, checks ears, throats, and whatever else they check and says everything looks fine. All they have is a cold. This is fine with me, except I had to drive 25 minutes to get to the office, when I wish they could have just told me the same thing when I called earlier instead.

So the days go by, Nate still seems a little sick. Grace was better, and both kids seemed to not have any more fevers. Then yesterday Nate felt warm again. I break out my handy dandy new temporal artery thermometer (thanks mom! I had an ear thermometer, but I found it was very inaccurate and inconsistent). It reads 101. something. 101.8 maybe. Anyway, it was inbetween 101 and 102. Poor Nate was running a fever for who knows how long. He could have been running a fever since I took him to the Dr the week before. That would make 11 days of fever. Surely he wouldn't have run a fever that long......right? Anyway, I give him some Tylenol before bed, and I decide that I will recheck his temperature in the morning, and if he was still running a fever, I would call the pediatrician again. This morning comes and his temperature was around 101 or 102 something. I get the kids ready and we leave to drop Grace off at school. On my way home I call the dr's office and after I tell the nurse my story, she misunderstands and advises me that fevers can take 4-5 days to get out of the system...Alternate Tylenol and Motrin and if its not gone in a few days, then call back. After realizing she didn't catch the fact that I brought Nate in Monday of LAST week, and not this week, I politely tell her that it's already been more than a week, and I just don't know if the fever had been continuous but its something that started almost 2 weeks ago. She decides that I should indeed come in right away to get him checked out. And so I do.

We get to the dr's office and I am happy to see an empty waiting room. That with the fact that our usual dr is the closest to "on time" that a dr can get reassures me that I won't have to wait long with a certain cute, impatient toddler who just wants to run and jump and climb and does not want to sit still in a dr's office waiting for an hour. But who could blame him? No one wants to sit there waiting. Anyway, we get called in pretty quickly, get Nate's temperature, which was taken with an ear thermometer and was normal now (that ALWAYS happens, I swear they must think I make these stories up) and attempted to get a weight, but Nate would have nothing of that. Good thing we had his weight taken last week.

So we get into the room, and while we are waiting, Nate plays cars. Mee pay caw, Nate says. (thats me play car, in case you don't speak Nate). So he plays, quietly and still. Yes, he was sitting still, playing. A moment for the record books for sure. The dr comes in not very long after we got in the room. She asks me the questions. I give her the answers. She peeks in Nate's ears. She does a quick glance in his throat. She asked about the rash on his chin, which of course by me telling you this means it still has not gone away. I tell her he has had it at least since I brought him in last week and that I thought it was just a drool rash--WAIT, while I interupt myself here. The dr last week also said it was just a drool rash, too. Hmmmmm. Anyway, she tells me more than likely Nate has Strep Throat. She said his throat was a mess, and she also said that the rash on his chin is Impetigo. The bacteria causes both, in case you didn't know. I didn't either until she told me. She wrote me a prescription for an oral antibiotic for the strep throat, and a topical antibiotic for the impetigo.

And here we are. It's 11:41pm. Nate went to bed with a fever of almost 102 and woke up about 2 hours ago in a sweat, so I'm hoping that means it broke. I feel bad for poor Nate if he had been this sick this whole time. I asked him last week where his boo boo was (trying to see if he had an ear infection and hoping that if he was in pain, he'd point it out), and he had pointed to his mouth. But seeing the fact that Nate is not yet proficient in the communication department, I wasn't sure he really had a boo boo in his mouth. Anyway, I just ask for your prayers that Nate will feel better quickly, and that no one else will get this, too, especially with Grace's birthday party being this weekend. Once he's had the antibiotics and has been fever free for 24 hours, he is no longer contagious, and the antibiotics should kick in pretty quickly. I'll keep you updated.

This Week

This is going to be a very busy week. Saturday 10 girls are coming to the house for a Princess Birthday Party for Grace, so in all through out the week, I will be working on the house and cleaning to get things ready. Until Saturday at 2:31 pm when the party ends, I will be acting crazy, so be forewarned, lol.

Anyway, to kick off the week, I did my usual Monday morning ritual of stepping on the scale. I had a terrible week weight wise. I stayed about the same most of the week, and then was down a few days ago, only to climb back up again. as of yesterday, I was up as well (I can't remember how much). Then after going to a family member's house for a BBQ, in which there were no good choices to make, I thought for sure the scale would show me a gain. However, this morning I am happy to report that one dough nut, one Sunkist soda, and 2 hot dogs later, I lost 1 lb. I don't know how or why after eating those awful things (although, I must admit, I really love Nathan's Hot Dogs....they are the best!!) my scale goes down. I don't understand it, but I will certainly take it. That makes my total weight lost 32.4 lbs, and that means I have lost just over 15% of my original body weight. I am really hoping to have a better week this week. I know 1 lb lost is still a loss and its a movement in the right direction, but I am still trying to get as close to my Vegas goal as possible, which was to have lost a total of 50 lbs by October 26th. I know I won't make that, but I am still trying to get as close as possible.

In other news, last week I started trying to see how far I could jog straight without stopping. The first day I tried, I got about 4/10 of a mile. The next day, I did just over a 1/2 mile. The next day I was able to do 7/10 of a mile (and it took me 8 mins 41 secs, which came out to about a 12 min mile, or 5 mph jog). I'm so excited, and after a few days off, I can't wait to get back out there and try to see hor far I can go next time. I wasn't able to get out over the weekend, due to being busy and the weather, and the weather was bad again tonight, so I am hoping to get back out tomorrow night. I'll keep you posted.

Well, thats all for now, as I must get some sleep. Busy, busy week. I'll try to blog when I can. Expect some cute pics this weekend or the beginning of next week from the party.

Belated Update

Yes, today is Wednesday and I am 2 days late for my Monday update. I've been pretty busy around here and both of the kids got sick, so I have been a little lax, to say the least. The results of Monday's date with the scale was that I was up .2 lbs. I know its not much, but it was definitely in the wrong direction. The put me at 31.4 lbs lost total.

As far as the exercise, I am trying to get back on track. I walked last night -- and about halfway into the walk it started to rain, so I got pretty soaked by the time I was done. I don't mind the rain, as long as there is no thunder or lightning to go with it. I also walked tonight. Last night I did my "Couch to 5K" walking/jogging program, and I was going to do it again tonight, however, as I started out on my walk, my cell phone rang and it was my dad, so I talked to him for most of the walk. I did do some jogging tonight, and I jogged about 4/10 of a mile straight. I was pretty happy, because the last time I tried I think I got about 2/10 of a mile and I was beat. Last night, I followed the program, which for the week I am on, Week 2 of the program, consists of a 5 minute warm up walk, followed by intervals of 90 seconds of jogging and 2 minutes of walking. That continues for 20 minutes, and then I cool down. I plan on trying to get in the walk/jog program around 5-6 days a week. I'm also trying to start up doing Yoga again. I really love the exercises because I hardly feel as if I am working hard, but I really am working hard, and I feel it the next day. I just love that it doesn't feel like work. I'm not sure if I will be incorporating anything else at this point, but this is the plan for now. Always subject to change =) I am still counting the miles I walk/jog from the Couch to 5K program into the 500 mile goal I set for myself, even if I don't make it by Vegas (since I've been slacking, I won't be meeting that goal unless I did 11 miles a day until my trip), I am still going to finish that goal.

Ok, thats all the updating I think I have for the moment. I think I'm going to end this blog because I have a funny feeling I am blabbing and making no sense or coherent statements. I'm apparently catching whatever it was that Nate and Grace have, and I am feeling pretty miserable at the moment, on top of being really tired. So, goodnight. Perhaps I will make more sense next time.

Five Years.......

Today is my beautiful, loving, and sometimes sassy daughter Grace's birthday. Five years ago today, my husband and I were blessed with a gift of God's Mercy and Grace--reminding us that sometimes God extends His mercy to us by not giving us what we deserve, and instead chooses to exercise His grace by giving us what we do NOT deserve.

Here are some snapshots of Grace's life thus far.....

Quick Update

Sorry I haven't been able to update you all sooner. I've been pretty busy around here the last few days, and tomorrow is Grace's birthday. At any rate, on Monday was down 1 lb. It would have been more, but since the last meal I ate the night before I check weigh in on the scale was pizza, I wasn't expecting to be down the 2 lbs I was on Friday. I'm not mad or upset, because I know that its totally my fault for eating pizza the night before. But, I'm very grateful that I got a pound out of the deal, too. I mean 7.4 lbs in 3 weeks is not too shabby, I must say.

This now brings me to a total of 31.6 lbs down. I'm still not sure why I'm losing weight better now than I was before. My exercise has been slacking BIG time. Its just been so hard to adjust since school started. I'm too tired first thing in the morning and also the last thing in the evening. Yes, I know those are excuses and that I should workout tired or not. But, that is a hurdle I am trying to get over and overcome. I walked tonight FINALLY after taking at least a week off, if not more. It felt good to get out again, I just need to break through this sluggish time I'm going through right now and get back into a routine. On top of my exercise slacking, I am not following the WW Points program as I have switched to core. Yet, on core I haven't been following 100%. I don't even know if I would say 75%, but somehow, its working. Now you get an extra 35 points a week on the core program to eat non-core foods. So, perhaps while I am not counting ANY points at all, I am falling within those 35 points while I am eating core foods. Each week I say I will keep up my eating the way it is as long as I still continue to lose weight, thinking and half expecting its not going to work, and yet I still keep losing weight. The way I am eating feels very comfortable......really as if I am not on a diet, which I really am not, but I always normally feel like I am. When counting points, there are times where I feel like all I think about is food. When can I eat next? How much can I eat? How many points do I have left? Now, I'm hungry, I eat. I watch my portions and eat good healthy food, occasionally eating something not so healthy and good. I don't get it, but I will certainly take it. I'm happy, content, and feeling strong mentally. Now I just need to work on the physical part in regards to exercise.

Beautiful Sunday Morning

This morning after I woke up, as I was getting breakfast together, I opened the front door to grab the newspaper off the door when I felt an unfamiliar feeling in the air in the hallway. I closed the door and thought to myself, "Hmmmm.....it really didn't feel all that warm out today. Strange."

So what did I do? I logged onto weather.com of course. And what did I see? At like 8 something in the morning (can't remember what time exactly, but it was after 8:30am) it was 75 degrees outside (the sun was hiding behind some clouds). Folks, it is usually that warm when the sun rises here, let alone two and a half hours later. Our overnight low only gets to about about 77 or 78, so for it to be below that........ was, well, quite simply amazing. I know, you may be thinking, Gabbi....its weather and its not that much different. But really, it is. Like for instance, like when you live up north and it start to get cooler out after the summer, it may feel like its cold at first. But once you get through the winter, the same temperatures feel SOOO much warmer than they did before. Its the same with the heat. When its first starting to feel like summer, 88 degrees feels so hot. But after the summers over and the temps have been nothing short of brutally hot, 88 feels oh so nice.

So back to my story. I was so amazed by the beautiful morning weather that I grabbed Ray and the kids and we headed to the park. Best of all, I don't think I sweat one drop. Nate on the other hand was dripping, lol.....but he was running around A LOT. I'm so glad and so grateful for the morning weather. Right now its about 87. Its a little on the warm side, but nothing crazy, and a little breezy, too. I know its not really fall yet here, and it won't be for at least another month and a half (well not really fall, but the cold fronts won't start coming until then), but I will gladly take the little changes in the weather--all that I can get.

Have a beautiful Sunday everyone. Weigh day is tomorrow!!! I think it's going to be a decent week again. We'll see.

On Cloud Nine....

I must say that after last week's phenomenal loss of 4 lbs I surely was not expecting anything great this week. But much to my surprise, this morning the scale, my new best friend (well until next week at least) showed I was down another 2.4 lbs! In the last two weeks I've lost 6.4 lbs, which it a combined total of almost the past 7 weeks prior! And honestly, I wasn't completely the best this week, by any means, which is even more shocking. One day I had a whopper from Burger King, Digiorno Pizza for dinner and half of a brownie at my friend's house and the next day I was down 1.4 lbs which was the first time I was down the entire week. Go figure! I swear, once I think I have this whole physiology thing figured out with my body, something that completely doesn't make any sense pops up and confuses me once again. But I must say that this whole Core program overall seems to be really working for me. One thing I've noticed is that I feel less hungry more often than not. I think with the lack of bad carbs and sugars, and the addition of whole foods with more fiber, my blood sugar levels aren't riding a roller coaster all day (carbs/sugars) and I'm feeling fuller with my food choices on top of that (fiber). It seems that even with the bad choices I've made some days, the good ones seem to even things out. Now I'm not expecting this to be a constant pattern, so I am going to do my best to continue to make good choices, but I will certainly be open to keeping up a 2+ lb loss each week for sure.

Today I was just so happy I felt like I was on cloud nine, because not only have I lost 2.4 lbs, but I am now down 30.6 lbs. I've almost lost 15% of my starting weight, and I reached another 15 lb goal. Now I have only 14.4 lbs left until my next 15 lb goal. Another 7 lbs and I will be back to what I was right after Grace was born before I gained all my weight. Now I say that knowing full well I was already overweight to some degree before Grace was born and I was even married, or even dating Ray. But I'm talking about the large amount of weight that I gained in such a short period of time right after Grace was born that pretty much changed my life for the past 5 years......so only 7 more pounds and I will be back to the beginning..........finally.

Pictures Are Worth 1,000 Words

I must say sometimes these silly clichés are true. When you're losing weight, sometimes you really don't feel any changes and it starts to discourage you a little bit. Meanwhile, there are changes taking place that are noticeable, it's just hard to see when you see yourself each and every day. Today, I got on the scale, even though it isn't my weigh in day, and I was .4 lbs shy of being down a total of 30 lbs. I felt so good about it, I decided to take a picture, even though that's supposed to happed once I finally reach the 30 lb mark. I had my wonderful sister-in-law Wendi put three pictures together for me to show my progress thus far. The first one I started with I was already down 6 lbs, the second one I was down 15 lbs, and the last one I am down 29.6 lbs. Each picture is a size smaller in jeans, and the last picture I was wearing a shirt that is more form fitting, something I wouldn't have even dared to do a few months ago.

I've definitely noticed changes in my clothing, but its nice to see, with my own eyes, the progress that I am making and the changes taking place. (sorry the pictures are a little blurry)

A Long Time Comin'....

So I know I've been a slacker in the blogging department, but honestly, not a whole lot has been going on. My exercise has been slacking lately, mainly due to the difficulty of waking up at 4:45am each morning, as opposed to being able to sleep in until 5:50am. That extra hour really helps. Last week I found it very hard to get myself to go walking in the evening, however, I have at least done that much this week. I've only been getting in a little over 2 miles in during the evenings, but I am really hoping to get going on a morning routine so I can start getting my mileage back up to at least 6 miles a day. At any rate, things in the exercise department have changed drastically due to the start of school and new schedules. I know that once the weather gets cooler, I will have time made available during the day for walks, but right now because of the heat I am limited.

With that said, I have also decided to switch up my eating plan after the pitiful .2 lb loss last week. I ended up eating McDonald's for breakfast that day, and then in the afternoon I got myself a Chocolate Blast from Baskin Robbins, followed by a pizza dinner that evening. Yes, I know that was bad, but, I'm human, and this is a tough struggle--DAILY. Did I feel guilty after Friday's events? Yes. But the important thing is I'm learning and I picked myself back up, got my senses back, and on Sunday the food choices were once again on track. However, Monday I decided to switch up my eating plan by switching from the Weight Watchers Flex program (where you count points for what you eat) to the Weight Watchers Core Program, which is where you eat from a list of Core Foods and you do not have to count points or calories. You eat what you want from the list until you are satisfied....not full or stuffed, but satisfied. You still exercise portion control, but you are filling your body with only foods that are good for your body-whole grain pasta, brown rice, potatoes, fat free daily products, eggs, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, oatmeal, soups that are not creamy (and doesn't contain things such as pasta or other non-core items).

I expected there to be a weight loss for sure, because if after switching things up, if I didn't see one, there was going to be a fight between me and my scale. However, I did NOT expect to see the awesome results I have seen so far. Since Monday morning, I am down 4.6lbs. The weight loss was like this: Tuesday down 1.6, Wednesday down 1.4, Thursday down 1.4, today down .2 Now while I was really not expecting a large number again today, I do know that it may have been possible to lose more than the .2 today because yesterday I did have some things that weren't quite core, such as a small bowl of cereal, a latte WITHOUT sugarfree syrup (bleh), a small bowl of a pasta and chicken dish that is made with a garlic cream sauce, and a good serving, or serving and a half, of these little bee shaped graham crackers. So, I do believe that the bad carbs and the sugars are really influencing my weight loss. I am SO happy with the results I've recieved this week because it really was a long time coming. I mean in one week I've lost close to what I've lost in the last 5 weeks combined. I felt defeated each week as I see others with losses of 2+ lbs, people in different shapes and sizes, different ages, different heights, different everything seeing a decent loss BUT me. Well, not this week folks. Gabbi's back in the game.

On top of my awesome week thus far (which isn't over until Monday since I am switching back to Mondays due to the plan switch occurring on Monday), I have reached some goals I have set for myself. One, I have now lost the most weight ever since trying to diet all these times during the last 5 years. I think the most I ever made it down was 27 lbs before Nate, and about 22 lbs last year. Today I am at 28.6lbs down. Second, I have mini-goals for each new weight range of 10 I get out of, ie, 130's, 140's, 150's.....you get the idea. Third, I have reached a weight I haven't been in almost two and a half years and its equal to the lowest weight I've been since Grace was born (which I must add that the actual lowest weight is about 9 lbs. less than where I'm at now, but all the gaining occurred AFTER Grace was born anyway.....so its the lowest since the gaining part). Fourth, I tried on a pair of jeans I wore when Ray and I dated and probably up until a month after we got married. When I wore them, I was about 20lbs lighter than I am now, but when I started this journey, I was not able to pull the jeans up all the way, nor come close to buttoning them. I tried this again some time during as well, and no luck. But now I can pull them all the way up AND button them. They are still a little tight, but with 10-15lbs I may be wearing them again. =) And last but not least, I had my very first non-family member ask me if I was losing weight today and she told me I looked good. Man, that is an awesome feeling, because when you are losing the weight, its really hard to "see" it the way everyone else can. You "feel" it but seeing it really makes you feel wonderful. So its an especially good feeling when people who don't see you everyday notice a change.

So needless to say, I've lost 4.6lbs this week, I've reached some goals--some really awesome ones-- and people can see the changes. Not much more could go better this week. Well, I suppose if Dairy Queen Blizzards suddenly became good for you and had 0 calories that would shoot my week right out of the water. But seriously, the best thing of all, is that little by little, day by day, I am FINALLY starting to feel like Gabbi again.......

Been Tagged.....

First, my weight yesterday morning had me down ONLY .2lbs. Yippee. (Yes, I am being sarcastic there).

Second, My sister-in-law Wendi told me I was tagged in a comment on my blog here. I went to her blog and found out what that meant because I had no clue. Apparently I'm supposed to write 8 things about myself, which I always find quite hard to do, and then I'm supposed to tag 8 other people. Unfortunately, not all of my friends have blogs, nor do they check them frequently, so I must resort to other methods of tagging to get a total of 8 people.

So here it is:

The Rules:
  1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
  2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
  3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog (about their eight things, and it could be a myspace blog, too) and post these rules. (**if you’re a non-blogger, you can email them or send them a myspace message!)
  4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
  5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Eight Random Facts/Habits About Me:
  1. I have some weird eating habits. For instance, I like lettuce but only in salads and not on sandwiches, unless it's a Twister from KFC or a Citrus Chicken Wrap from Crispers. I like Mayonnaise on hamburgers, however only if its just mayo and nothing else. Its either ketchup OR mayo, not both at the same time. I think thats enough examples for now.
  2. I broke my arm when I was about 21 months old, and I remember exactly how it happened, telling my parents my arm was hurting, and even being taken to the doctor. Strange, huh?
  3. When I was 5, I was riding bikes with a neighborhood boy when I decided that I thought it would be fun to crash my bike into a plastic garbage can. I fell, however, before I made it to the garbage can due to my bike tire hitting a rock and throwing me off of my bike, chin first into the ground. I narrowly escaped stitches, getting butterfly bandages instead. Oh I also got some really cool Barbie toy from the store for getting hurt so bad.
  4. I can water-ski. I actually LOVE water-skiing, although I haven't been in years. I can start from within the water or off of a dock. I have been able to, in the past and not so sure if I could do it again, drop one ski while skiing and cross over the wakes on one ski (slaloming).
  5. I used to be a pretty good archer, too. Again, haven't done it in years, but I loved archery. Man do I miss summer camp.
  6. I used to eat Liverwurst when I was a child. Ah, no wonder.......
  7. My front teeth were chipped when I was 9 while I was swimming in a pool. Another boy jumped on my head, causing me to hit my teeth on a metal ladder. My right front (top) tooth was chipped pretty badly, while the left one was chipped as well but only a small amount. I didn't get my teeth bonded until I was about 15 or 16 years old, and have had to have them rebonded twice since. I just had a root canal and a crown put on the tooth that was badly chipped, although I had to have the crown redone once already and I am about to get it redone once again due to color issues. Thank goodness I don't have to keep paying for the new crowns.
  8. I was recently reminded of how easily I tan. While I did get a little burned last weekend on one of my walks, my shoulders are now almost as dark as the rest of my arms, and my strange triangular burn is now a strange triangular tan line. Tanning easily doesn't help a person who knows its not good to be in the sun too long to actually stay out of the sun. It's actually more encouraging to go into the sun more often. Tanning easily is actually a curse.

Grace's First Day of School

So, it's not her first day of Kindergarten, but it seems that way. This is the first time Grace will be attending a school and not a preschool, and its her first time going 5 days a week full time. Last year started out with 2 full time days and ending up with 3 full time days the last half of the year. She was really excited and she just looks so stinkin' cute in her uniform. Anyway, I know you're really just interested in the pics of Grace and not me blabbing my mouth away, so here you go:
All ready for school:

Ready with her backpack:

Ok, time to walk out the door:

In the school parking lot:

On the way in to school:

In her classroom:

Caught off guard playing. Already she thinks she owns the place =) :

Am I Crazy??

Yes, I think I may be.

Lately I've realized that I get pretty upset if there isn't time for me to go walking. Picture a little kid on the floor of a grocery store, kicking and screaming and flailing their arms all over because they didn't get what they want. Well, thats not me. But I am still pretty peturbed. What happens is I have every intention of waking up at 6am to do my walking, but then once the alarm goes off I say, "Hey, I'll get to it later." Then later comes, and there just isn't time. Then I get frustrated. I suppose its good that I am craving the exercise, but here's where the crazy comes in. Today, time was made available around 12:15pm for me to walk, however, since I absolutely HATE walking on the treadmill (perhaps if the treadmill was located in front of a TV instead of a mirror, I may like it more), my only option was to walk outside. Not just any ordinary outside.....but "midday, summer hot, hottest time of the year in South Florida, very humid, feels like 100 degrees" outside. And if you know me, you know I am as anti-hot as they come.

So yes, I guess I've become a little crazy.

I walked 3 miles outside today. I need to do several more miles today but I was pressed for time, and by the end of the third mile, I had about all I could take of the heat. I must admit, I got a little arrogant during the first mile. I barely even broke a sweat and thought, hey, this ain't bad. No problemo. I could walk all day. Things, however, suddenly changed during the second mile, but still very tolerable. The last mile was the hardest when I was completing the last half mile, I decided to walk through the hallways throughout my complex as much as possible on the way back home. If I had to walk in the heat that last half mile, I may have ended up calling Ray to come get me because I'm not sure I would have made it all the way back.

At any rate, I pushed on and did what I set out to do. I had a goal to walk the entire 3 miles, and I wasn't going to give up until I was done. And that made me proud, because if you know me, you know that the old Gabbi would have grumbled about walking half a mile in the heat, let alone three. And all this after my walking in the heat encounter last weekend, to boot.

The one drawback was I think I may have gotten a little sunburned. Now to me, I still try to think logically about the sun, and how its not good for me, etc, etc. However, there's still the part of me that loves how I look with a tan, and how much I just want to get one, no matter what. But let me tell you, theres nothing nice about a strange triangular farmer's tan. Once this sunburn turns brown, I'll have one of those for sure.

Here is my strange, triangular sunburn on my shoulder

A New Trend??

This morning I was a little apprehensive with getting on the scale because quite honestly, it hasn't been treating me very nicely lately. I worked my butt off this week, figuratively and hopefully a little literally. I started being really good with my water intake, although that just started 2 days ago. In the last week, I've walked 37 miles, which is far from what I've ever walked in that past, and I'm even missing some miles as I wanted to try to complete an average of 42 miles per week. At any rate, I was hoping for something awesome this week, and well, I may have gotten just that. While its not crazy awesome as I would have liked to have seen a number double to what I got, the number I got was certainly WAY better that what I've been getting. The number...................2 lbs down. Yay! In the last 18 weeks, this will be the fifth time I've seen a number with a 2 or higher in front. Everything else has been under 2......13 weeks or less than 2, while watching everyone else I know blow past me with their weight loss has been a bit discouraging. But perhaps this is my season to kick it up into high gear. Maybe the extra walking and the water is the trick. Who knows. What I do know is I will see how this week goes, and if its the same of better, than I know I'm doing something right. If its worse than this week, well, there will be some changes in the diet department for sure.

I had a battle with myself a few days ago. I don't know what came over me or what set off my thoughts, but I said to myself, "Why are you doing this? You should just give up. There's no sense in continuing on." But I told myself that was wrong, and that I would not quit. This is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I will have to watch what I eat for the rest of my life. Now granted, my limitations won't be as strict once I'm maintaining and not trying to lose, but let's face it. My metabolism's not going to get any better and I'm going to have to constantly keep my food in check. But it's all worth it in the end. =)

So now I'm down an even 24lbs. That puts me at 6lbs away from my next goal, being 30lbs down, and some more progress pictures.

Feeling Good

Ok, so after I posted my last blog, I started getting comments from people about what a great thing it was I am doing and I thought, "Uh oh, what did I get myself into?" But that's just what this blog is for; accountability. If I were to keep this to myself, I would tend to slack off way more. But by blogging it to the world, it keeps me on my toes, striving daily to complete the task. It's going to be a challenging one, for sure. Walking 6 miles a day, 7 days a week, for 12 weeks is no walk in the park. Well, it could be a walk in the park, but not an easy walk in the park.

Since Thursday, I have walked 11.75 miles. Two on Thursday, 6 yesterday, and 3.75 miles so far today. I will be doing another 2.25 later on, but time ran short and I was not able to do all 6 at one time. I've decided that I enjoy walking outside more than I like to walk on the treadmill, so at 10am this morning when I set out to go walking, I did just that; walking outside. Since I've given up excuses, it didn't matter that it was hot out and that the sun was blazing away. So I walked 2 miles outside, and realized I was just about dead. I was so hot, I was so red, and I think I may have gotten some sun, too. So I decided to finish up in the gym here in my complex and walk on the treadmill in the AC. Hey, at least it got done, right? Also, I discovered that I enjoy walking on certain treadmills more than others. The gym where I live has two different types of treadmills, with three treadmills total. The one I've been using is big and bulky and harder to keep my balance without holding on, yet the one I used today is smaller and it just makes walking seem as if it's on solid ground. While I like this treadmill way better than the other one, I still enjoy walking outside, because the constant changing of scenery makes the time go by faster.

While I must say that I am pretty worn out after my walking sessions, I feel REALLY great. I remember these feelings after soccer practices where we would work so hard, feel so tired during our workouts, but when we were done, man, I would feel like a million bucks. That's how I feel now. I feel like I am really accomplishing something, and I am. I still love my elliptical workouts, and when I get more time, I will be resuming that for a change in routine. I also will still be doing the walking/running thing eventually, once I start building up some endurance with the walking. This week I will be adding crunches, squats, lunges, and push-ups to the mix, as well as some yoga to help with the stretching my body needs with walking so much. I hope to stay on plan with that, but I will have to let you know how that goes.

On another note, I mentioned I wanted to walk 500 miles by October 26th. The reason for this is on October 26th, I will be going to Las Vegas for 2 days to meet up with the people in my support group. This is exciting because not only will we be meeting in person, but we will all be a lot healthier and more in shape than when we first met. Also, from Las Vegas I'll be going to California to visit my sis-in-law and her hubby for a couple of days as well. I'm really excited, as this is a much needed vacation!
